About The Event
May 22nd: The Ghawazee of Egypt Workshop
Immortalized in early European accounts of Egypt and photographs from the 1893 Chicago World’s Fair, the Ghawazee are indegenous dancers that, as ethnically outside the traditional Egyptian population, performed publicly and unveiled in the streets at various social functions such as weddings and festivals. Today there are only a few Ghawazi dancers left active in the world. Who are they? How and why did they change over time? How do they figure into Egyptian culture? What exactly is “Ghawazee dance?” This workshop offers an introduction and a taste of the vibrant cultural traditions of this unique tribe of dancers and entertainers.
Friday Night Movie & Lecture Series are FREE to the general public. You are welcome to bring your own beverage and snack and prepare to be DAZZLED by the Ancient East & all of it's Wonders!
